One Hundred Years of Silent Seeds

One Hundred Years of Silent Seeds was in remembrance of Gandhiji’s first Satyaagraha in Johannesberg a hundred years ago, on September 11, 1906, and the countless unknown pockets of non-violent creative resistance across the world.

The performance was based on the previous project, Navashwaasam, but developed further to include other texts, and to manifest the concept of shanti sainya, or peace force. One of the additional texts was by Howard Zinn who reminds us to see history from the perspective of popular people’s moments towards justice and unity, rather than the history of the forces of power and greed, and gives us ways to continue participating joyously in these movements. The poem that concluded the performance spoke of acts of creative resistance throughout history and invited the audience to tell their own stories, promising to share these stories with future audiences, and thus were the seeds spread and sown.

As in Navashwaasam, here too Malavika tested the boundaries of stage space and interaction with members of the audience, giving them ways to participate in the dance and theater.
